Smoking Cessation (Patient Counselling Guide)

Smoking Cessation is encouraged to reduce the risk of developing diseases caused by smoking and to improve health in general. Cigarette or tobacco smoking can lead to nicotine dependence and addiction. Everytime a person smokes, each puff introduces nicotine into the body, along with 500 different toxic chemicals, exposing the respiratory tract to possible health hazards brought about by the habit. Smoking, in itself, has been related to various health hazards, including chronic lung and airways diseases, lung cancer, cardiovascular diseases, eye cataracts, gastrointestinal diseases, circulation problems and premature aging of the skin. It also brings harm to the fetus of a pregnant smoker, or to family members through passive smoking.
