Nasal Congestion (Patient Counselling Guide)

05 Jun 2020
Nasal congestion, or stuffy nose, occurs when the membrane lining of the nose become swollen due to inflamed blood vessels. It may be caused by several factors eg, colds, allergies (ie, to dust, pollen or pet dander), sinus infections, flu, or overuse of medications used to relieve nasal congestion. It is important to identify the exact cause and treat nasal congestion appropriately, in order to prevent the development of complications, which is especially critical in children. A stuffy nose can interfere with the normal functioning of the ears and with normal speech development. Nasal congestion may also interfere with sleep, cause snoring, and may even be associated with sleep apnea (a momentarily stop in breathing during sleep).
