Muscle Pain (Patient Counselling Guide)

05 Jun 2020
Muscle pain, or myalgia, is pain that involves any or all muscles of the body. As compared to bone pain, it is often less intense but can be very unpleasant. It also heals faster, taking only about 48 hours particularly if the pain is due to minor overuse. Muscle pain may be brought about by tension or stress, muscle strain (pulled muscle) due to overexertion, and injury or trauma including sprains. Many disorders eg, autoimmune diseases (polymyositis, dermatomyositis and lupus), infections or infestations of the muscle (staphylococcal abscess of the muscle, trichinosis) and other generalized infections (influenza, malaria, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, polio, leptospirosis, rat bite fever, measles and rheumatic fever), also cause muscle pain. Discomfort normally disappears after resting the affected body part. However, persistent or recurrent muscle pain may require immediate attention as this may be a manifestation of an underlying medical condition.
