Migraine (Patient Counselling Guide)

05 Jun 2020
Migraine is a recurrent, episodic headache that may or may not be preceded by an aura (a focal neurologic symptom). It often affects one side of the head, starts off mild, increases in severity over minutes to hours, and resolves gradually at the end of the attack. It is often accompanied by nausea and sometimes vomiting, and sensitivity to light and noise. Migraine may happen only once or twice a year, or as often as daily. It is more frequent in women than in men with peak prevalence in persons aged 22 to 55 years. Migraine also tends to run in families. The cause of migraine is not well understood. However, migraine may be caused when nerves in the brain become irritated and release chemicals that cause inflammation. Migraine is one of the leading causes of disability. Predisposing factors include stress, depression, anxiety, menstruation, menopause and head or neck trauma. Complications that may occur include chronic migraine, status migrainosus, medication overuse headache, and migrainous infarction (or stroke). Many patients will experience sustained reduction of migraine headache with advancing age. However, migraine aura without headache becomes more frequent with advancing age.
