Leukorrhea refers to the normal vaginal discharge that functions to lubricate and protect the vagina from infection and irritation. It is formed by mucoid endocervical secretions, epithelial cells, normal vaginal flora and vaginal transudate. Depending on the menstrual cycle, the normal vaginal discharge is clear or white, sometimes yellowish, watery or thick and sticky, and odorless. During pregnancy, the discharge is thin, white, milky and mild smelling. Other factors that may affect changes in characteristics of the vaginal discharge include diet, sexual activity, stress and medications. Abnormal leukorrhea is when there is a change in color, appearance and odor of the discharge, or when there is accompanying itch or pain, which may indicate an infection.
