Hypertension (Patient Counselling Guide)

05 Jun 2020
Hypertension or high blood pressure, is a condition common these days, affecting more men than women, with the risk increasing from middle age onwards. It occurs when the flow of blood exerts too much pressure on the walls of the arteries. Blood pressure measurements have 2 readings: The higher value is the systolic blood pressure (SBP) whereas the lower value is called the diastolic blood pressure (DBP). BP target varies among different patient populations depending upon the age (≥60 yrs old, <60 yrs old) or comorbidities (eg, diabetes, chronic kidney disease) present. The exact cause of hypertension is unknown in about 90% of the cases but there are factors that increase the risk of this disorder. In most instances, hypertension is asymptomatic. Dizziness, nausea, vomiting and headache, though present in some patients, are often due to organ complications resulting from hypertension. Factors that may lead to hypertension include age, heredity, gender, smoking, alcoholism, obesity, stress, kidney diseases, adrenal disorders, congenital heart defects, certain drugs, pre-eclampsia, high salt intake and living a sedentary lifestyle.
