Depression is the leading cause of disability, affecting more than 300 million people worldwide.1 In addition to mood symptoms, patients with MDD commonly experience significant impairments in physical, occupational and social role functioning. According to the National Comorbidity Survey Replication, 87.4% of respondents with 12-month MDD reported at least moderate impairment in home, work,relationship or social role functioning.2 These impairments contributed significantly to the economic burden of MDD; MDD-related absenteeism and presenteeism were associated with an estimated 225 million lost workdays per year, and USD36.6 billion salary-equivalent lost productivity per year.3
