Dyslipidemia (Hyperlipidemia) (Patient Couselling Guide)

05 Jun 2020
Dyslipidemia, also known as hyperlipidemia, is the presence of abnormal levels of fats or lipids in the blood. These fats include cholesterol or triglycerides, or both. These fats are also known as serum lipoproteins. Cholesterol is an essential element found in all human cell membranes and is a structural component of steroid hormones and bile acids. Absence of cholesterol may affect some body functions and may even lead to death. This is the reason why cholesterol levels should be maintained at a certain level - not too much and not too little. Triglycerides, on the other hand, are essential in facilitating the transfer of energy from food into body cells. Lipoproteins are categorized according to their density. This density is based on the amount of cholesterol, triglycerides and apoproteins present. The densest and smallest are called high-density lipoproteins (HDL) which are also called the "good cholesterol". Lipoproteins that are less dense are called low-density lipoproteins (LDL). The least dense and the largest of all the lipoproteins are called very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL). LDL may pose problems to people's health. These LDLs are said to increase as people age and are normally higher in men than in women. Patients with dyslipidemia may develop atherosclerosis, which may lead to cardiovascular problems.
