Its causes vary and may include a change in the diet, food intolerance (eg, lactose), inflammatory bowel disorder, certain drugs (antibiotics, magnesium-containing antacids), a bacterial infection (food poisoning), a viral infection (rotavirus in children) or a pathogenic protozoan (amoebiasis). People with diarrhea, especially the very young and the elderly, are at risk of becoming rapidly dehydrated. Dehydration may be fatal at times; hence, it requires immediate medical attention.
