Malaysians need to start viewing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) as an emergency, says MOH Director-General of Health Tan Sri Dato' Seri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, in response to the recently published National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS 2019).

In June, among the stream of headlines covering the COVID-19 pandemic, the publication of the NHMS 2019 results made a quieter splash, revealing concerning trends in NCD prevalence among Malaysians (see infographic).

Speaking in an interview with MIMS Pharmacist, Noor Hisham noted that an estimated 91.5% of COVID-19 deaths in Malaysia were associated with at least one NCD, demonstrating the need to invest in NCD prevention and control as an essential foundation for security and preparedness.
