Tigecycline therapy produces favourable outcomes in severe Clostridium difficile infection (sCDI), says a study.

The combined use of piperacillin and tazobactam does not appear to be a suitable alternative to meropenem for patients with bloodstream infections caused by ceftriaxone-resistant Escherichia coli (E. coli) or Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae), according to results of the MERINO* trial.

The addition of low oxygen levels measured by pulse oximetry to the three signs delineated in the current diagnostic model for pneumonia in primary care setting derived by van Vugt, which include fever, tachycardia, and crackly breath sounds on auscultation, can add value to diagnostic precision and help general practitioners (GPs) differentiate pneumonia from less serious infections, a study suggests.

Ceftazidime-avibactam appears to offer a reasonable alternative to colistin in the treatment of Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC)-producing carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) infections, according to a study.

Commensal bacteria facilitates tissue-specific responses mutually beneficial for both host and microbe

Lymphoid-resistant commensal bacteria (LRCs) colonize the interstitial lymphoid tissues of healthy mammals.

LRCs were found to colonize murine dendritic cells and modulated cytokine production.

When tested in germ-free and antibiotic-treated mice, LRCs colonized the interstitial lymphoid tissues and induced IL-10 cytokines. Dendritic-cell-derived IL-10 and group 3 innate lymphoid cell (ILC3)-derived IL-22 were also induced.

Pro-inflammatory Th17 cell responses were limited by IL-10 while LRC colonization in the steady state was enhanced by IL-22 production.

LRCs provided host tissue protection against intestinal damage in an IL-10R-dependent manner.
