Infants delivered via caesarean section may be at increased risk of developing acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, according to a US study. Altered microbiota colonization is a possible explanation for this risk, although clear biological mechanisms have yet to be established.

Commensal bacteria facilitates tissue-specific responses mutually beneficial for both host and microbe

Lymphoid-resistant commensal bacteria (LRCs) colonize the interstitial lymphoid tissues of healthy mammals.

LRCs were found to colonize murine dendritic cells and modulated cytokine production.

When tested in germ-free and antibiotic-treated mice, LRCs colonized the interstitial lymphoid tissues and induced IL-10 cytokines. Dendritic-cell-derived IL-10 and group 3 innate lymphoid cell (ILC3)-derived IL-22 were also induced.

Pro-inflammatory Th17 cell responses were limited by IL-10 while LRC colonization in the steady state was enhanced by IL-22 production.

LRCs provided host tissue protection against intestinal damage in an IL-10R-dependent manner.
