Asthma (Patient Counselling Guide)

05 Jun 2020
Asthma is a respiratory disease characterized by inflammation of the airways (bronchial tubes) which causes airflow into and out of the lungs to be restricted, hence leading to its hallmark symptom of wheezing as well as coughing, chest constriction, and labored breathing. During an asthma attack (ie, asthma symptoms become worse than usual), the muscles of the bronchial tree become tight, the lining of the air passages swells, and mucus production is increased resulting in narrowing of the airways. While the exact cause is still unknown, this condition is commonly linked to allergies, genetics, environment and weight.
