Current three-drug combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimens have proven to be highly effective, and the use of the relatively inexpensive rilpivirine (RPV) appears to have considerably better tolerability profile than efavirenz or protease inhibitors in regimens containing abacavir plus lamivudine (ABC/3TC) for treatment-naïve patients, offering a good, less costly approach to suppressing HIV, as shown in a Singapore study.

Allergy in Infants (Patient Counselling Guide)

04 Jun 2020
An allergy or hypersensitivity reaction is an inappropriate immune response ranging from mild to severe to a normally harmless substance. Normally, the immune system defends the body against foreign substances (antigens). However, in susceptible people, the immune system can overreact to certain antigens (allergens), which are harmless in most people. The result is an allergic reaction. Some people are allergic to only one substance, while others, to many. Infants and young children are particularly prone to allergies because their immune system is still immature and trying to adapt to the environment. Allergens may cause an allergic reaction when these come in contact with the skin, are inhaled, eaten, or injected. An allergic reaction can occur as part of a seasonal allergy (eg, hay fever), and is caused by exposure to substances eg, grass or ragweed pollen or triggered by a drug, certain foods, dust or animal dander. Common causes of allergies in babies aged 0-12 months old are foods (milk), drugs, infection, inhalants, insects, some systemic diseases, and hereditary disorders.
