Tonsillopharyngitis is the inflammation of the tonsils and pharynx.
Etiologies include bacterial and viral pathogens.
Sore throat is the most common presenting symptom in older children.

Response to Therapy

  • Clinical response is usually evident within 24-48 hours
  • Persistence beyond 48 hours may indicate alternative causes or development of suppurative complications which warrants reassessment

Management of Complications

  • All abscesses should be drained
  • Tonsillectomy if patient has a history of recurrent tonsillitis
  • Acute tonsillectomy without prior incision

Prevention

  • Good hand hygiene
    • Frequent hand washing
  • Good respiratory etiquette
    • Cover nose/mouth when coughing or sneezing
  • Patients should not go daycare or school and to avoid crowded places to reduce transmission until patient is afebrile and at least 12 hours after antibiotic therapy
