Surgical Intervention
InterStim Therapy
Sacral nerve stimulation
- Used in patients with urinary urgency, frequency, urge incontinence and retention
- A small device implanted under the skin of one of the upper buttocks
- Works by gently stimulating the sacral nerves to help the bladder function normally
- Small piece of tissue from the intestine is added to the wall of the bladder to increase the size of the bladder
- Done by opening the abdomen and sometimes through the use of laparoscope
- Consider in patients with non-progressive neurological disorders and impaired bladder storage
- Procedure is only done if all other options have failed to treat overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms
- Tubes from the kidneys to the bladder and ureters are routed directly to the outside of your body
Sacral nerve stimulation
- Small pulse generator is implanted under the skin of the buttock to send electrical signals to the nerves that control the bladder
- Another pulse generator used to stimulate the nerves controlling the bladder
