HYPOTHYROIDISM (PEDIATRIC)
Hypothyroidism is due to decreased or absent production of thyroid hormone.
Primary hypothyroidism is caused by generalized tissue resistance to thyroid hormone and disorders that affect the thyroid gland directly. It is responsible for majority of hypothyroid cases.
Central hypothyroidism is caused by hypothalamic or pituitary disorders.

Patient Education

  • Hypothyroidism in patients is permanent & treatment is lifelong
  • Patients are recommended to remain on the same thyroxine (T4) formulation that they started w/
  • Parents should be educated on the following:
    • Etiology of hypothyroidism
    • Benefits of early detection & therapy in preventing mental retardation
    • Appropriate administration of therapy & which substances may interfere w/ absorption
    • Importance of treatment adherence as well us follow-up
