FOOD ALLERGY (PEDIATRIC)
Food allergy is an adverse reaction due to a specific immune response occurring reproducibly upon exposure to certain foods. It occurs minutes to hours after food consumption.
Immunological mechanisms can be IgE mediated, non-IgE mediated or mixed IgE and non-IgE mediated.
It may be life-threatening and is the most common cause of anaphylaxis in children.
It should be differentiated from food intolerance in which adverse reactions from exposure to food arise from non-immunological mechanisms.

Patient Education

Patient/Caregiver Education 

  • Nutritional counseling & regular growth monitoring are recommended for all children w/ food allergy (FA)
  • Patient & caregivers should be educated on allergy to avoid inadvertent ingestion of food allergens
    • Learn to read food labels, to inquire at restaurants & take precautionary measures to prevent unintentional exposure to known food allergens
  • Medical information bracelet or necklace for the patient can provide important medical details when patient is found unconscious or cannot communicate due to the food-induced adverse reaction
  • Food allergy action plan should be developed, containing steps to take in case of a reaction
    • Include doses of medications & contact information for family members & health care providers
    • This plan should be thoroughly discussed w/ patients, family members & caregivers
    • Patients w/ history of food-induced anaphylaxis need to know how to use self-injectable Epinephrine
