ATTENTION DEFICIT/HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER
Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by the presence of impairing levels of inattention, disorganization and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity.
Symptoms that suggest ADHD include hyperactivity, acting without thinking, inattention/daydreaming, fidgety, restless, excessive talking, aggressive behavior, academic underachievement, disorganized and has difficulty in completing tasks.

Introduction

  • Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurobehavioral disorder that is marked by a pattern of inactivity, hyperactivity and impulsivity that affects the functioning and development of a child
  • ADHD is frequently present along with  ≥1 of the following associated conditions:
    • Learning disabilities (eg cognitive impairment, specific learning disorder, motor coordination problem, memory or auditory discriminatory problems)
    • Speech and/or language delays
    • Anxiety disorder
    • Mania-bipolar disorder
    • Autistic disorder
    • Conduct disorder
    • Depression
    • Psychosis
    • Oppositional defiant disorder
    • Family and/or social problems
    • Other medical problems (eg iron deficiency, lead toxicity, Tourette’s syndrome, tics, sleep apnea)

Signs and Symptoms

  • Hyperactivity
  • Acting without thinking
  • Inattention/daydreaming
  • Fidgety, restless
  • Difficulty in completing task
  • Excessive talking
  • Aggressive behavior
  • Academic underachievement
  • Disorganized
