Hydroxycarbamide can be used as a treatment alternative to regular blood transfusions in preserving transcranial doppler (TCD) flow velocities among children aged 4-16 years with sickle cell anaemia and abnormal TCD flow velocities but no severe vasculopathy, as stated in the multicentre, phase III, randomised, open-label, non-inferiority TWiTCH study.

Moreover, treatment may aid in protecting these patients from primary stroke.
